Summary

This project involved the demolition & removal of the existing substantial residence & the construction of a new home that provides for the needs of the owners & their three young children.

The new home is located in the historic fishing village of Camp Cove, Watsons Bay. Its typology and culture is that of the freestanding cottages found in the area. The house is located on a rectangular site that generates its dramatic geometry, roofline and entry point. The house possesses substantial street presence while maintaining integrity & respect to the village environment within which it is situated. It cleverly conceals the spectacular view of Sydney Harbour & Camp Cove beach from the entry. The plan is a progression of spaces with an extended perspective that opens up proportionally, in all directions, towards the spectacular view. The design is enhanced by the addition of two annexed timber clad pavilions that combine with the main house to provide a large northern courtyard which provides substantial light & openness whilst maintaining it dramatic relationship with Sydney Harbour. These pavilions respect the village feel of the original house that previously stood on the block while providing the owners with the beach feel they desired from their new house.

The overall result is a spectacular modern family home, meeting the practicality & functionality required by the owners & their young family, yet maintaining its relevance in the historic village environment of Watsons Bay, all while maximising the sensational views afforded to the house from its location on Sydney Harbour.
