Summary

This project involved the restoration, renovation, alteration & additions to a National Trust Listed three (3) level grand sandstone Victorian Terrace located in the historic upmarket area of Woollahra.

The project work involved the alteration, renovation & restoration of the existing 3 level sandstone section of the house with the excavation of a cellar in front of the Queen Street façade & the removal of large sections of the existing sandstone rubble walls at the lower ground floor level & the support of the same walls on the levels above. The rear section of the existing terrace & the lower ground floor level saw the addition of a family room & dining room giving a contemporary element to an otherwise heritage home. There was the restoration of the existing 3 level weatherboard tower which is attached to the rear façade on the party wall side of the home. The rear yard was terraced & landscaped leading to a garage/workshop/plant room on the ground floor level & a first floor level studio/bathroom located on the rear boundary with laneway access.

A majority of the numerous construction difficulties encountered on this project were solved by the close working relationship between the builder, engineer & design team. We were required to think outside the box to achieve the required result & we succeeded in what was more a civil engineering project at times than a private residential house.

The overall result was a stunning combination of the existing heritage characteristics blended with understated contemporary elements to produce a family home that is practical, functional & one the owners & their young family are thoroughly enjoying living in.

We consider this home to be a very satisfying & successful project bringing together our passion for new & modern building elements and our respect & appreciation of the heritage architecture of yesteryear.
